Lester Holt Takes Over 'Nightly' - Brian Williams Demoted to MSNBC

Andrew Lack, Chairman of NBC News and MSNBC, on Thursday announced that Lester Holt will be named the permanent anchor of "NBC Nightly News."

Holt, 56, has been a television news reporter for thirty-four years. He joined NBC in 2000 and became the full-time anchor of "Weekend Nightly News" in 2007. He also anchors "Dateline" and co-anchors "Weekend TODAY."

"Lester has done outstanding work for NBC News over the last ten years, and he's performed remarkably well over the last few months under very tough circumstances," Lack said. "He's an exceptional anchor who goes straight to the heart of every story and is always able to find its most direct connection to the everyday lives of our audience. In many ways, television news stands at a crossroads, and Lester is the perfect person to meet the moment."

Lester Holt said, "This is an enormous honor. The respect and admiration I have for the Nightly News team has only grown deeper over the last several months that we've been together. Day-in and day-out under an uncomfortable spotlight they have produced world-class journalism. I'm very proud and grateful to be part of such an unflappable and dedicated team of professionals as we move forward together."

Lack and Steve Burke, CEO of NBCU, have decided that Brian Williams will not be the anchor of "Nightly News." Williams, who was an anchor at MSNBC from 1996 to 2004, will now join MSNBC as anchor of breaking news and special reports. He will work with Mark Lukasiewicz, SVP of Special Reports for NBCU News Group, who will help lead a team to strengthen MSNBC's daytime coverage by further leveraging NBC News' expertise in breaking news. In addition, Williams will serve as a breaking news anchor for NBC News live special reports when Holt is not available. He will begin the new role in mid-August.

NBCUniversal conducted a review of Brian Williams' significant reporting in the field and commentary related to that reporting on NBC News platforms and in other public appearances over a period of more than ten years. The review was overseen by Kim Harris, Executive Vice President and General Counsel of NBCUniversal, who previously served as Deputy White House Counsel and as Senior Counsel at the U.S. Department of Justice. It was conducted by Richard Esposito, who leads the investigative unit at NBC News.

The extensive review found that Williams made a number of inaccurate statements about his own role and experiences covering events in the field. The statements in question did not for the most part occur on NBC News platforms or in the immediate aftermath of the news events, but rather on late-night programs and during public appearances, usually years after the news events in question.

Lack said, "Brian now has the chance to earn back everyone's trust. His excellent work over twenty-two years at NBC News has earned him that opportunity."

Mr. Burke said, "First of all, I want to thank Lester Holt. Lester stepped into the anchor chair in a trying time and has really come through for us. We are lucky to have him and I know he will continue to do great things at NBC News for years to come."

Burke continued, "As you would imagine this was a difficult decision. Brian Williams has been with NBC News for a very long time and he has covered countless news events with honor and skill. As I said in February, we believe in second chances, and I am hopeful that this new beginning will be good for Brian and the organization. This matter has been extensively analyzed and deliberated on by NBC. We are moving forward."

On his return to NBC, Williams said: "I'm sorry. I said things that weren't true. I let down my NBC colleagues and our viewers, and I'm determined to earn back their trust. I will greatly miss working with the team on Nightly News, but I know the broadcast will be in excellent hands with Lester Holt as anchor. I will support him 100% as he has always supported me. I am grateful for the chance to return to covering the news. My new role will allow me to focus on important issues and events in our country and around the world, and I look forward to it."

Susan Tully Named President/General Manager of NBC Connecticut

The NBC Owned Television Stations division of NBCUniversal today announced that Susan Tully has been named President and General Manager of NBC Connecticut / WVIT, the local station owned by NBCUniversal that serves viewers across the state of Connecticut. Tully, who starts her new role today, succeeds Ric Harris, who recently became President and General Manager of NBCUniversal’s two local stations in Philadelphia, NBC10 and Telemundo62. Tully reports to Valari Staab, President, NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations.

Tully has worked for the NBC Owned Television Stations for the vast majority of her more than 30-year career in local television. Most recently, she was Vice President of News for NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth / KXAS, a position she held for the last 14 years. In this role, Tully oversaw a newsroom of more than 100 journalists in a highly competitive market that encompasses 24,000 square miles and is home to more than seven million residents.

“Susan has led the KXAS newsroom through countless news cycles, including deadly tornado outbreaks, the Dallas Ebola crisis and the murder and trial of the American Sniper, with professionalism, tenacity and, above all, a strong commitment to the viewer,” said Staab. “I know she’ll be a great General Manager and I am excited to see how she uses her strong talents and abilities to advance NBC Connecticut even further.”

During Tully’s tenure at KXAS, she built an award-winning investigative unit, an experienced meteorology team in an intense weather region and a community-based reporting strategy to cover more of the massive North Texas market by hiring video journalists who live and work in key local cities. As the station’s news leader, Tully also played an important role in the move to a brand new, 75,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility that houses KXAS along with more than 10 other NBCUniversal businesses, including the local Telemundo station, KXTX, and the NBC News Dallas Bureau. Additionally, Tully has taken on leadership responsibilities within the larger station group, such as spearheading news strategy and planning efforts on behalf of the NBC-owned stations around large company initiatives, like the Olympic Games and the Super Bowl.

“WVIT is a strong station with a solid team that is innovative, passionate and gets results,” said Tully. “I’ve long admired their work and am so honored by the opportunity to lead them into the future.”

Before joining NBC 5 in Dallas-Fort Worth, Tully was Assistant News Director at NBC10 Philadelphia / WCAU for three years. Prior to that, she held a number of roles of increasing responsibility at NBC 7 San Diego / KNSD for seven years, culminating with her being named Managing Director at the station.

Tully holds a bachelor's degree in Radio, Television and Film from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. She and her family will be relocating to the Greater Hartford area.

'Bianca' Expanding to 7 More Stations

Just five months after its January premiere in New England, Bianca de la Garza's late-night talk/entertainment show is expanding and dropping 'Unanchored' from the title.

'Bianca,' hosted by the former WCVB & WFXT news anchor, is expanding to seven CBS-owned stations in major markets. Joining the 'Bianca' station lineup for weekly Saturday night broadcasts are KCBS (Los Angeles), KYW (Philadelphia), KTVT (Dallas), WKBD (Detroit), WCCO (Minneapolis), KDKA (Pittsburgh), and WJZ (Baltimore).

"Bianca is an entertaining and smart broadcaster who has been very successful for many years in New England," said Peter Dunn, President, CBS Television Stations. "We are pleased to give her the opportunity to significantly expand her popularity by clearing her show on many of our stations following our late news on Saturday nights."

The program, created by former Boston news anchor Bianca de la Garza, combines celebrity interviews and field pieces with pop culture, fashion, comedy and signature features like B Fearless in which Bianca goes way beyond her comfort zone by zip lining in the jungle, surfing, trying standup comedy and singing during a sellout concert. De la Garza, a single Latina mother who anchored New England's #1 award-winning morning show explained, "I'm no better than the next person at any of these things, but this no-holds-barred approach lends itself to our fun party-like vibe."

After 17 years on top of the news ratings heap in her native Boston, the 39-year-old journalist who earned Emmy kudos for her coverage of the Royal Wedding of William and Kate, exclusive interviews with world leaders like Mohammed Al-Fayed and exposes of human trafficking and illegal sweatshops, formed Lucky Gal Productions. That entity is the "Bianca" production company for the series, which is the flipside of news -- spontaneous entertainment with an informational twist.

The stations debuting all-new episodes of "Bianca" for a 10-week run on Saturday nights are:

KCBS Channel 2 in Los Angeles – 11:35 p.m.-12:05 a.m. PDT.

KYW Channel 3 in Philadelphia – 11:35 p.m.-12:05 p.m. EDT.

KTVT Channel 11 in Dallas-Fort Worth – 10:35 p.m.-11:05 p.m. CDT.

Lori & Wayne Earl surprised by generous donation from Ernie Boch Jr. by Sorboni Holbrook

Sorboni Banerjee, morning anchor at WFXT-TV FOX 25, hosted her first charity gala on Saturday night at ALBA Restaurant in Quincy, MA.

It was an evening under the stars for Quincy-based "This Star Won't Go Out." TSWGO provides funds to help pay for travel, a mortgage or rent check, and other cost of living expenses for the families of children with cancer. The purpose of the gift is to relieve some normal everyday life burdens, so the parents can focus on what really matters - their child.

The gala also honored the memory of 16-year old Esther Earl, an "avid Nerdfighter and passionate Harry Potter fan," who died four years after her diagnosis of thyroid cancer. Esther was the inspiration behind the bestselling novel and this past summer's blockbuster movie "The Fault in Our Stars."

Since its founding in 2011 by Esther’s parents, Lori and Wayne Earl, TSWGO has given out more than 75 gifts totaling $125,000 to help families suffering from financial hardship related to childhood cancer.

"I'm blown away by the city of Quincy and beyond for showing up in full force!" Banerjee said on Twitter.

Local celebrities and business people attended the event that was hosted by Banerjee including Ernie Boch Jr., who donated $25,000 to the cause. There was also a raffle and silent auction with donated items to raise money for the event. Among the many things up for auction were a behind the scenes tour of FOX 25; lunch with Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch; an autographed hockey stick from Bruins defenseman Dennis Seidenberg; and a private dinner for 10 cooked by celebrity chef (and brother of Mark & Donnie) Paul Wahlberg.

Ramiro Torres from JAM'n 94.5 helped Banerjee with the raffle and silent auction duties, and Rich DiMare of KISS 108 was the deejay for the night.

Jack Williams Officially Retiring from WBZ

Jack Williams Officially Retiring from WBZ

Almost a year after he signed off the anchor desk and continued in a reduced role at WBZ-TV CBS 4 in Boston, Jack Williams is officially saying goodbye to the station he called home for 40 years.

“I’m just a kid from a small town out in the Rocky Mountains. I just pinch myself all the time. I lucked out in life with my profession,” said Williams to WBZ as he stood overlooking Boston’s vibrant Seaport District. “This is all I ever wanted to do.”

A television journalist since 1968, Williams has been an anchor at WBZ-TV News since 1975. Williams received a 2014 Columbia duPont Award and a 2013 Peabody Award as part of WBZ-TV’s team coverage of the Boston Marathon Bombings. In 2012, he was given the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA). Williams was also inducted into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame, and he was one of only five New England journalists to receive the prestigious 2012 Yankee Quill Award which is considered to be the highest individual honor awarded by fellow journalists in the region and is presented annually by the Academy of New England Journalists.

Last August, Williams announced that he was stepping down from the WBZ anchor desk after 39 years.

“After 39 wonderful years, I’ve decided to step away from the anchor desk, but I’m absolutely not leaving WBZ-TV News,” said Williams. “Even though I won’t be a nightly anchor, I am thrilled that I’ll be able to continue my ‘Wednesday’s Child’ reports, substitute anchor when need be, and still be a part of WBZ-TV’s signature events and specials. It’s great to have the opportunity to focus on ‘Wednesday’s Child’ and continue to be a member of the WBZ family.”

“Jack Williams is a true legend of broadcasting. We are grateful for all he has done and everything he will continue to do as a member of the WBZ-TV family and the New England community,” said Mark Lund, President and General Manager for CBS Boston’s WBZ-TV and myTV38, last year.

Since he stepped down, Williams has been traveling back and forth from Las Vegas to continue his 'Wednesday's Child' segment, and has even filled in on the anchor desk a few times.

Williams launched his “Wednesday’s Child” in 1981. Airing each Wednesday on WBZ-TV News at 6PM, “Wednesday’s Child” features a special needs child who is in search of a permanent home. Over the years, the segment has helped more than 800 special needs children find loving homes. Williams is responsible for raising more than $10 million for special needs adoption. In April 2000, Williams created the “Jack Williams Endowment for Wednesday’s Child,” a 501(C) (3) charity to ensure continued financial support for special needs adoption. Each year Jack and Marci give $430,000 in grants to agencies and group homes helping special needs children find adoptive homes.

The Wednesday's Child foundation that Williams and his wife Marci founded was left with a "healthy" endowment and Williams says it will continue to "help children for years and years to come.

Last year Williams insisted that this was not retirement. When he ended his last newscast he said "...you know what? The fun isn't over yet. I'm not dead yet!"

While his fun is still not over, his time at WBZ is. CBS Boston director of communications Kerri Landry tells New England One that June 25 is Williams last day at the station. Reflecting on how he would like to be remembered, he says “That I had a lot of curiosity, and I tried hard, and I tried to tell the truth.”

As his nearly 40 years on Boston television comes to a close, his new life with his wife, children and grandchildren starts a new chapter.

For all of his time at WBZ, sharing the stories that mattered and being someone that viewers considered a part of the family, he says he will leave WBZ with a smile on his face. After such a long career, he says that he "didn’t really expect I would become household word in New England, believe me. Except maybe a swear word!”

On behalf of the people in Boston, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and all of New England, we say... Thanks, Jack!

The station won five out of twelve regional Edward R. Murrow Awards earlier this year, winning far more than any other television station in New England.  The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) presents the Murrow Awards annually. The awards recognize the best electronic journalism produced by radio, television and online news organizations around the world.

"This is an exciting time in broadcast journalism because today’s viewers have more options than ever before to consume their news,” said WCVB President and General Manager Bill Fine.  “WCVB is committed to delivering the best, most comprehensive news coverage to our viewers across all our platforms, whether broadcast or digital, and is deeply rooted in serving our local community.  To be recognized for our efforts by the RTDNA, an organization that upholds the journalistic standards of the legendary Edward R. "This national Murrow award is a testament to the extraordinary talent and hard work of our NewsCenter 5 team.  It is the highest form of praise to be recognized in such a way by our peers and I am very proud of our entire team."

WCVB’s national Murrow award for “Newscast – Large Market” recognizes its NewsCenter 5 coverage of a destructive tornado that tore through Chelsea and Revere last July, with a path length of two miles and path width of 3/8th of a mile, and maximum wind gusts estimated at between 100 and 120 mph.  WCVB's regional Edward R. Murrow awards include Overall Excellence, Newscast, Breaking News Coverage, News Series and Website. This was the sixth consecutive year that WCVB received top honors in the regional "Overall Excellence," "Newscast" and "News Series" categories.    The RTDNA received more than 4,200 entries during the 2015 awards season, setting an all-time record for the third year in a row.

NBC to Trump - You're Fired

With a very short statement, NBC has ended its business releationship with Donald Trump over recent comments he made.

The company that still employs Al Sharpton on MSNBC, and recently decided to keep lying anchorman Brian Williams (and send him to MSNBC) said this:

At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values.

Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump.

To that end, the annual Miss USA and Miss Universe Pageants, which are part of a joint venture between NBC and Trump, will no longer air on NBC.

In addition, as Mr. Trump has already indicated, he will not be participating in “The Apprentice” on NBC.

“Celebrity Apprentice” is licensed from Mark Burnett's United Artists Media Group and that relationship will continue.

Trump, never one to back down, brought up the Williams issue and said the following:

"As of today, Donald J. Trump is no longer affiliated with NBC. Mr. Trump stands by his statements on illegal immigration, which are accurate. NBC is weak, and like everybody else is trying to be politically correct--- that is why our country is in serious trouble."

"We must have strong borders and not let illegal immigrants enter the United States. As has been stated continuously in the press, people are pouring across our borders unabated. Public reports routinely state great amounts of crime are being committed by illegal immigrants. This must be stopped and it must be stopped now. Long ago I told NBC that I would not being doing The Apprentice because I am running for President in order to Make our Country Great Again."

"If NBC is so weak and so foolish to not understand the serious illegal immigration problem in the United States, coupled with the horrendous and unfair trade deals we are making with Mexico, then their contract violating closure of Miss Universe/Miss USA will be determined in court. Furthermore, they will stand behind lying Brian Williams, but won't stand behind people that tell it like it is, as unpleasant as that may be."

We'll see who caves, and if this really ends up in court.

Chris May, 2 Others, Out at CBS 3 Philly - Updated

Chris May has announced that he is leaving KYW-TV, the CBS owned station in Philadelphia, New England One first reports.

"I've anchored my last broadcast at CBS3. Hope to see you all again" he said on Twitter, leaving one to assume it was an abrupt decision.

CBS 3 spokesperson Joanne Calabria tells New England One that "We thank Chris for his years of service and wish him the best in his future endeavors."

Chris joined KYW in 2007 as co-anchor of the weekend evening newscasts. In 2008 he was promoted to weekday evening anchor, and most recently co-anchored Eyewitness News at 5, 6 and 11 p.m., as well as Eyewitness News at 10 p.m. on The CW Philly 57. Since joining KYW, he has reported on stories like the 2008 Democratic and Republican Conventions as well as co-hosting the National Constitution Center's Liberty Medal telecast and CBS 3's coverage of the Phillies World Series Championship Parade. He was an integral part of storm coverage, spending 16 hours reporting on Superstorm Sandy when it hit the Jersey Shore. He has also followed up in covering the recovery and rebuilding process.

In 2014, a lawsuit was filed against CBS Broadcasting and Chris for false child sex-abuse report. According to a lawsuit filed in Philadelphia’s Court of Common Pleas, May went on the air on September 29th at 6 p.m. to tell viewers about a supposed sex abuse scandal at a local charter school.

The suite accused him of saying "…a police supervisor at a Philadelphia charter school is fired over allegations of child sexual abuse. Howard Rubin is the suspect. He is accused in the sexual abuse of an underage male student. Rubin worked at the Multi-Cultural Charter School on North Broad Street."

The station allegedly chose as an accompanying graphic a photo of Howard Rubin, emblazoned with the word “Suspect.” However, Rubin wasn't fired from his job and he was never accused of sexual abuse. And according to Rubin's attorney, Derek Steenson, CBS never bothered to call Rubin for a comment. The day after the story ran, CBS 3 issued a correction and apology in its evening newscasts and sent a letter to the principal of the school, who, in turn, sent a letter to the parents of the school to address the "false story," writing, "It is extremely important that students and parents understand that there is absolutely no validity to this story."

The lawsuit is still pending.

Chris came to KYW from sister station WBZ-TV CBS 4 in Boston, where he had been co-anchor of WBZ-TV News at 5:00 p.m. and TV 38 News at 9:30 p.m. alongside current FOX 25 anchor Sara Underwood.

Prior to that, Chris was an anchor at WHDH-TV NBC 7 in Boston, where he anchored the early evening newscasts at 4pm, 4:30pm & 5pm alongside Frances Rivera. He also reported for the late evening newscasts.

Chris came to Boston from KATV-TV ABC 7 in Little Rock, AR where he had been a primary anchor.

A native of Little Rock, Chris is a 1993 graduate of Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Telecommunications in Tempe where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Journalism.

In addtion to Chris, KYW has also parted ways with 10pm & 11pm meteorologist Kathy Orr, and sports director Beasley Reece.

Reece, a former NFL player, has been with CBS 3 since 1998. He started in TV sports at WTOG-TV in St. Petersburg, FL as a sports reporter and anchor. After 3 years, he joined WVIT-TV NBC 3- (NBC Connecticut) in Hartford. He spent almost 10 years at NBC Connecticut before returing to WTOG in 1997, and then joining KYW in 1998.

Orr has also been at KYW since 2003 when she joined as chief meteorologist. She was the first female meteorologist in the Philadelphia market when she joined WCAU-TV in 1998.

A station source told Philly.com that due to sagging ratings, the new general manager of the station has "been on a mission to turn things around, and people are being let go left and right."

WBZ Parts Ways with Managing Editor & Digital Assets Manager

In a surprise to the newsroom, WBZ-TV let go two key behind the scenes people in management roles yesterday, New England One has learned.

Peter Wilson, who has spent the last 6 years as the managing editor at the CBS owned and operated station, was let go after being with WBZ for close to 20 years. According to a station insider, Wilson was at "the core of every breaking news event" WBZ has covered with him in this role.

In his LinkedIn bio, Wilson lists his duties as managing editor as "direct[ing] the editorial focus of the WBZ-TV news team and its team of journalists to break news stories, develop exclusive content, and drive critical ratings." The last part of that may be a reason he is no longer with the station. WBZ has suffered in the ratings in recent years, despite several attempts to makeover the station and draw viewers.

In his role as managing editor, Wilson played a key role in the coverage of the Boston Marathon bombings that won the station a Peabody Award and the Alfred I duPont – Columbia University Award.

We were told that Wilson worked very hard, but "ruled with an iron fist," which didn't make him too popular in the newsroom.

Wilson started at WBZ in 1997 and spent 4 years as a producer of the 11pm newscast. In 2001, he was promoted to executive producer of the stations evening newscasts and live special events coverage. During his 8 years in that position, he covered the Terrorist Attacks on 9/11, Patriots’ Super Bowls, Red Sox World Series Championships, Tall Ships Boston and First Night Boston. In 2009, he was promoted to his most recent position of managing editor.

Wilson is a graduate of Northeastern University where he studied broadcast journalism.

Greg Nickerson, WBZ's digital assets manager for the past two-and-a-half years, was also let go.

As a digital asset manager, Nickerson performed a wide-range of duties including media management, troubleshooting, and workflow design from ingest, edit, and play-out of on-air news and commercial media; both within the WBZ facility as well as for the photographers and journalists in the field. The duties of this critical position in the digital age of television news branch into multiple areas of WBZ-TV including the newsroom, promotions, graphics, and web departments. The role is also very active in researching, testing and implementing new technologies in effort to streamline efficiencies and quality control of post-production.

Prior to joining WBZ in 2013, Nickerson was a support engineer and instructor for Avid Technology in Burlington, MA. In addition to two video editor positions, he's also held various positions in private industry.

Nickerson is a graduate of Fitchburg State University where he studied communications and media.

New England One requested comment from WBZ, but we have not heard back.

FOX 25 Adding Weekend Morning News

A few weeks ago, we told you that WFXT-TV FOX 25 in Boston was adding more resources for the second time since Cox Media Group took over the station in 2014.

We now know why.

A FOX 25 representitive has confirmed to New England One that FOX 25 will be starting a weekend morning newscast. In an announcement to staff today, the station said that they are expecting to launch the new newscasts in late summer or early fall.

The newscasts will air each Saturday and Sunday from 6am-10am.

Since CMG took over FOX 25, the resources of the station have substantially increased. The station has also seen success in its turn to hard news in the ratings. In the most recent June rating period, FOX 25 took first place from 4am-5am; 7am-9am; and 10pm-11:30pm in adults 25-54.

FOX 25 had been the only news station in Boston, and the only FOX station that CMG owns, without a weekend morning newscast. The station has had a weekend newscast in the past, airing an hour-long newscast at 9am on Sunday mornings from 2004-2009. Initially, the program was anchored by current Fox News Channel Boston reporter Molly Line.

FOX 25 is still staffing up for the launch of these newscasts. If you're looking for a job in television news, you can visit www.MyFOXBoston.com to browse and apply for all posted positions.
